Popping The Vote.

When I've been involved in compiling critics polls at UK titles it's been quite revealing - one magazine editor (mentioning no names) insisted that I "edit" the writers' poll as they would make the "wrong" album AOTY that year. And another year, at another title, the No 1 album of the year didn't appear at No 1 in any one of the 40-odd writers' lists, but because it was in the top 5 of more or less everybody's, it came out on top. If you're talking about 1000 people, I expect something that appeared somewhere in maybe 300 lists would storm the top 10, and something that got more than 20 No 1s would be No 1. Especially in a year like this one, where there seems to have been no clear-cut favourite.
