He had his moods, but he inhabited them with a fierce dignity, as if he'd made a conscious decision to be unhappy as a protest against a ridiculous and unjust world. If he was depressed -- and it would have been pretty hard to deny it -- his depression seemed to have an ethical rather than chemical origin.
